Choosing a bra style for a smaller cup size: which one fits you?

Choosing a bra style for a smaller cup size: which one fits you?

Do you have a smaller cup size and feel like your breasts just don't look right in a regular bra? Then look for a style that fills the cup instead of just laying over it: a push-up with jelly strips like the Jelly Push-up Bra, or memory foam cups like in the Daily Essential Bra that shape themselves to you. A stiff underwire cup often leaves extra room at the top on a smaller size, and that's usually where things go wrong.

Which bra style actually works best for a smaller cup size depends a lot on what you're after: more volume, a natural shape, or a little of both. In this article we line up the main options side by side, with a few simple self-tests so you can figure out which style fits your situation.

Why do small cups often not fill out a regular bra?

With a bigger cup, your breast fills the cup on its own. With a smaller cup, there's often room left over, especially at the top of the cup. You can see it in wrinkles in the fabric, or you can feel it because the cup doesn't touch your skin everywhere.

That's not a matter of picking the wrong size. It comes down to the shape of the cup itself. A stiff, flat cup is made to be filled by a lot of volume, and with a smaller cup size that actually works against you.

Because I have a smaller cup size, my breasts unfortunately don't look great in "regular" bras

Sound familiar? That's your sign to look at a different cup style, not a different size.

Self-test: put on your current bra and feel with your finger at the top of the cup. Is there room, a fold, or a gap at the top of your breast? Then your size isn't the problem. The style is.

Of the nearly 2,900 women we asked ourselves, 10.9% mention a cosmetic issue like shape or volume not quite working. Much more often, 54%, it's a physical complaint: an underwire that pokes, a band that digs in, or straps that slip down. That doesn't mean a nice neckline doesn't matter, just that you should weigh both when you choose: how it feels, and how it looks.

Push-up with jelly strips: more cleavage without an underwire

If you want your breasts to actually get more volume and lift, a push-up bra is the obvious choice. The Jelly Push-up Bra is seamless and works without an underwire: jelly strips give support in exactly the spot where a regular bra would have an underwire, and push your breasts up and in.

That works well for smaller cup sizes, because the strips fill in the missing volume instead of just covering it up.

Self-test: push your breast up and toward the center with your flat hand right now. Do you instantly see a fuller neckline? Then a push-up is exactly what you need. Barely any difference? Then volume isn't your real problem, and extra push won't help as much as you'd think.

One thing to note: the Jelly Push-up Bra's size chart goes up to cup DD. If you need a bigger cup size, this isn't the style for you. Look at the Daily Essential Bra instead, which goes up to cup H.

Memory foam cups: a natural shape with no underwire pressure

Not looking for extra volume, just a cup that follows your shape instead of fighting it? Then memory foam cups are worth a look. The Daily Essential Bra has cups that mold to your body, instead of a rigid, stiff shell your breast has to fit into.

A double layer of shaping foam holds everything together at the sides, so no spilling out and no uniboob, even with a smaller cup. The 3-inch-wide band supports from below, so the weight isn't all resting on your shoulders.

This style comes in cup B through cup H, in sizes S through 3XL+. That means you can stick with this style even later on, if your cup size changes. That also makes it a good pick if you're still torn between push-up and a natural style: either way, you won't outgrow it anytime soon, even as your body changes over the years.

Lace with lift: the Lace Lift Bra for all day

Love a pretty lace look, but still want lift? The Lace Lift Bra is a wireless push-up with lace, made for women who wear their bra 12 hours a day or more. That makes it a solid middle ground between the full push of the Jelly Push-up Bra and the natural shape of the Daily Essential Bra.

The Lace Lift Bra's size chart runs from cup A through F, so it also works for a smaller cup size. Because this style is wireless, you're less likely to even notice you're wearing a bra by the end of a long workday, while your neckline still gets real shape.

When a push-up isn't the right call

A push-up isn't the answer for everyone, even with a smaller cup size. If you often wear thin or fitted fabrics, the extra fill of a push-up can actually show through your clothes instead of staying hidden.

Self-test: put on a fitted shirt over your current bra. Can you see the edges of the cup through the fabric? Then extra fill works against you, and you're better off with a seamless style like the Posture Lift Bra, which sits completely smooth and invisible under clothes, with extra-high sides for a clean silhouette.

Are you actually happy with your volume, and is gapping or extra room in the cup your real issue? Then you don't need a push-up. Memory foam cups that follow your shape solve that without adding volume. Three styles side by side: which one fits you?

Sometimes it just helps to line the options up. Here's a quick rundown so you can see at a glance what fits your situation.

  • Jelly Push-up Bra: for more volume and a fuller neckline, no underwire. Size chart up to cup DD.
  • Lace Lift Bra: for lace with lift, for women who wear their bra 12 hours a day or more. Size chart from cup A through F.
  • Daily Essential Bra: no extra volume, just a cup that follows your shape with no gaps or extra room. Size chart from cup B through cup H.

Still not sure? Start by asking yourself whether you want more cleavage, or mainly a better fit. That tells you whether you should go with a push-up or memory foam cups. From there, look at practical things like how long you wear the bra each day, and whether you'd rather feel an underwire or not.

What's your actual cup size?

Before you pick a style, it's worth checking that you're wearing the right size in the first place. Measure your band size snug under your breasts, then measure your bust at the fullest point. The difference between those two numbers gives you your cup size.

We work with sizes from S through 3XL, which are converted behind the scenes from these bra sizes. Still torn between two sizes, or not sure how, say, a 36D compares to an S, M, or L? Read all about it in our article on Monavida bra sizes.

Frequently asked questions about bras for a small cup size

Which bra style is best for a small cup size?

That depends on what you want. If you want more volume and a fuller neckline, go with a push-up like the Jelly Push-up Bra or the Lace Lift Bra. If you mainly want the cup to follow your shape with no gaps, the Daily Essential Bra with memory foam cups is the better pick.

Can a push-up bra work without an underwire?

Yes. Both the Jelly Push-up Bra and the Lace Lift Bra work without an underwire. Instead, jelly strips or a sturdy cup construction give you the support and lift you'd normally expect from an underwire, minus the poking.

What if my cup stays empty even though I'm wearing the right size?

Then the problem isn't the size, it's the style. A stiff, flat cup won't fill out on its own with a smaller cup size. Go with memory foam cups or a push-up instead, depending on whether you want more volume or mainly a better fit.

Does a push-up bra show under clothes?

That depends on the fabric of your clothes and the style you pick. If you often wear fitted or thin tops, look at a seamless style like the Posture Lift Bra, which is made to stay invisible under clothes.

Still not sure which style is right for you? Check out the Jelly Push-up Bra and feel the difference in your neckline yourself, no underwire and no feeling it's even there.
