Monavida bra sizes: often runs too big or too small

The Monavida size chart is accurate in most cases, but that "too big" or "too small" feeling almost always comes down to a handful of fixed causes: you're still measuring on your old underwire size, you're stuck between two sizes, or your body has changed since you last measured. Of the nearly 2,897 women we asked ourselves, 8.2% name the wrong size or cup as their biggest frustration, far fewer than the number bothered by underwire that digs in or presses. Below you'll find a quick test for each cause, one you can do right now.

"That I no longer have a bra that fits well. They're either too small or too big"

Sound familiar? You're not alone. But that doesn't mean the size chart is wrong. It usually means something else is going on, and you can check it yourself.

1. You're still measuring on your old underwire size, and it's simply outdated

Underwire bras stretch out in the band over time, so you might already be wearing a band a full size too big without noticing. Order the same size you're used to from Monavida, and suddenly the band feels too tight while the cup feels too loose, or the other way around. Our size chart works off your band size measured snugly under your bust, not the number printed on the label of your old bra.

Try this: pull a tape measure snug under your bust, arms at your sides, and breathe out normally. Can you still slide exactly two fingers underneath? That size is right. Can't fit anything underneath? You measured too small. Can you fit three fingers or more? You measured too big.

Always wore a 36C with another brand? That doesn't automatically translate at Monavida, because we calculate band and cup size together to land on a size. For more on what can still go wrong even with the right size, read Bra doesn't fit right despite the correct size: what's going on?

2. 40D: is that a Large or an XL? That's the real question

At Monavida we work with sizes from S through 3XL+, converted from your bra size. That means you can't just translate your bra size straight into a clothing size from your closet. Both your band size and cup size matter, and it's usually right on the line between two sizes where things go wrong.

Try this: write down your band size on its own (say, 31 inches, measured snugly), and separately the difference between your bust measured loosely and that band size (say, a 5.5 inch difference, so a D cup). Look up those two numbers together in the size chart instead of guessing from one number alone. When you're stuck between two sizes, the cup is usually what decides it, not the band.

The Daily Essential Bra runs from band 32 through 48, with cups from B through H, across twelve sizes. If you fall right between two of those sizes, go with the cup, since it stretches less than the band.

3. Your body has changed since you last measured

Your breasts change shape and size over the years, after losing or gaining weight, and simply with age. Customers mention this directly: someone who hasn't been able to tolerate an underwire in years, someone who lost a significant amount of weight and hopes her old J cup finally fits. Your body from five years ago isn't your body now, and your bra size shifts right along with it.

Try this: measure yourself again, even if you've worn the same size for years without complaints. A couple inches' difference in the band is enough to shift you into a different cup. Not sure the cup is right for you? Read Bra cup too big despite the correct size: what's the fix.

4. Stuck between two sizes? You often pick the wrong side

If you're torn between two band sizes but the cup fits fine, the band is the problem, not the cup. Size up a full size and you'll end up with a cup that's suddenly too loose while the band finally fits. The smarter move: go with the smaller band if the cup fits, and give yourself that bit of extra room in back with a bra extender instead of changing the cup at all.

Try this: hook the closure on the tightest setting. Can you still breathe normally without the band cutting in? If not, stick with the cup you had and fix the band separately with a bra extender instead of ordering a whole size up.

5. Your cup falls outside the size chart's range

Let's be honest here: not every size works with every style. The Daily Essential Bra goes up to cup H, with band sizes from 32 through 48. If you already wore an I or J cup with another brand, you're simply outside this style's range, and that's not a measuring mistake, it's a style that wasn't made for your cup size.

The same goes for the other end of the chart: there's no XS, and the smallest cup is a B. If you're looking for a smaller cup starting at A, the Lace Lift Bra, with a range from cup A through F, is often a better starting point, or the Posture Lift Bra with cups A through DD, for anyone who prefers something fully invisible under clothes.

Try this: compare your current cup size with another brand to the top of the range for the style you're considering. If you're already past that number, this isn't the right style for you, no matter how well the rest of your measurements line up.

What if the size still isn't right?

Reviews show that customer service regularly sends a different size at no extra cost if the first choice turns out too big or too small, with no proof required. That takes a lot of the risk out of ordering online. With the Posture Lift Bra, this even has a name: the 30-day perfect fit guarantee.

The Daily Essential Bra is built so that small size differences are less noticeable than with an underwire bra: memory foam cups that shape to you instead of a fixed structure on top of you, and a 3-inch wide band that spreads the weight of your cups across more of your back. That doesn't mean every size will work, but you're less likely to feel a sharp edge if you fall right between two sizes.

Frequently asked questions about Monavida bra sizes

I fall right between two sizes, which one do I choose?

First figure out whether it's the band or the cup that's between two sizes. If the cup fits, go with the smaller band and handle extra room with an extender. If the band fits, choose based on the cup, since it stretches less than the band does.

Can I exchange for free if the size doesn't fit?

Customer experiences show this is usually handled without any hassle, and the Posture Lift Bra comes with the 30-day perfect fit guarantee for exactly this.

I wear a 40D, what size is that at Monavida?

That depends on your band size and cup together, not the number 40D on its own. Measure your band snugly and the difference with your bust separately, then look up that combination in the size chart instead of guessing based on your old size.

Does Monavida carry sizes above cup H?

No, the Daily Essential Bra goes up to cup H. If you need a bigger cup, this particular style isn't the right choice for you.

Does the band on the Daily Essential Bra stretch out after a while?

If you notice your bra fits differently than when you first bought it, read Bra doesn't fit anymore after a while: now what? for the causes and fixes that go with it.
