Why does one bra style fit and another one not?

Why does one bra style fit and another one not?

The same size fits one bra model and not another, because every model has its own cup shape, band width and size chart. An M in one bra doesn't stand for the same cup-band combination as an M in another model, even within the same brand. That's not a math error on your part. It's just how a bra is built.

Of the nearly 2,900 women we surveyed about this, 8.2% name the wrong size or cup as their biggest frustration. Not because they don't know their size, but because that same size plays out differently from model to model. Below, you'll find out why, and how to check it yourself before you order.

1. Every model converts your size differently

Our sizes, S through 3XL, are converted per model from that model's own size chart. The Daily Essential Bra runs from cup B through cup H, in band sizes 32 to 48. The Posture Lift Bra goes from cup A through DD, in band sizes 32 to 40. So a size M means a different cup-band combination in one model than in another.

That's why a bra that scores well review after review might not fit you in that same size, while a different model fits perfectly. The number on the label isn't the problem. The chart behind it is.

Try this: pull up the size chart for the specific model you want to order, not the brand's general chart. Check where the top cup size falls. If you normally fall into the top cup of one model, there's a good chance you'll need to skip a size on a model whose cup range starts lower.

2. Cup shape decides the fit, not the number

A cup size tells you about volume, not shape. One model has a fixed cup that only really follows one breast shape well. Another uses memory foam that molds to whatever you bring to it. So at the same letter on the label, one cup can fit just fine while another spills out on both sides or gaps at the top.

If your breast spills out the side of the cup, you'll often see a uniboob look under your shirt. That's not your body's fault. It's a cup that doesn't give enough room on the sides. Say you normally wear a 34C and that cup spills over in a certain model. It's often smarter to go to a 32D in that model than to size up the band.

Try this: put your bra on and look straight ahead in the mirror. If you see flesh spilling out between the cups, or out the side under your arm, the cup shape is the issue, not necessarily the size.

The Daily Essential Bra uses memory foam cups that mold to your shape, plus a double shaping layer that keeps everything in place on the sides. That solves this exact spillover problem, without you having to switch sizes over and over.

Got the opposite problem, too much room at the top of the cup instead of too little? We cover that separately in this article on extra fabric at the top of the cup.

3. The band never sits quite the same, even at the same band size

The band carries most of your bra's weight. But how wide that band is and how it's built varies a lot between models. At the same band size, a narrow band digs into your back faster than a wide band that spreads out that weight.

That's why you can wear a 36 in one model and never notice it, then wear that same 36 in another model and have marks on your skin within an hour. In our own survey, 4.0% of women name marks or irritated skin as their biggest frustration, and that often comes down to exactly this difference.

Try this: press a finger against the band on your back. If you can easily slide more than two fingers under it, the band is too loose for this model and you should size down. If it digs into your skin the moment you breathe, it's too tight, even if the label says the same band size as your old bra.

The Daily Essential Bra has a 3-inch wide band that supports from below, so the weight doesn't rest on a narrow edge but spreads across a wider piece of skin. That width alone is why the same size can feel completely different than it does in a narrower model.

Does your band roll up when you sit, even though it fits fine standing? That has a different cause, explained in this article on a band that rolls up.

4. Straps sit differently, which makes the same size feel heavier

Not every model places the straps in the same spot, at the same angle or with the same width. Straps set closer to your neck pull on your shoulders differently than straps set farther apart. At the same size, one model can feel like a backpack on your shoulders while another is barely noticeable.

Try this: pull a strap away from your shoulder and let it snap back. If the cups immediately drop a little with it, the band isn't doing enough work and your straps are picking up the slack. If everything stays put, the band is doing its job and the straps are mostly there for shape.

Many women notice less pressure on their shoulders once the weight sits on the band instead of the straps. That's exactly why straps are named as the biggest frustration by 9.6% of the nearly 2,900 women in our survey. Not because straps are bad on their own, but because in the wrong model they end up doing the band's job.

5. Your body often falls between two sizes

No size chart is built around your exact body. If you fall between a B and a C in one model, that same measurement can land right on the C in another model, simply because the cup jumps are spaced differently there.

I've always been in between sizes and never found a bra that fit 100% right

Sound familiar? That feeling isn't because you have a difficult body. It's because every model has its own jumps between sizes, and those jumps rarely line up exactly with your measurements.

Try this: measure your band size and cup separately: the band snug under your breasts, the cup at its widest point. Then check the chart for the model you want to order to see if you land right on a line. If you're right on the line, pick the size with the bigger cup: a cup that's a touch roomy can be fixed with the straps, but a cup that's too small will just spill over.

Some models, like the Daily Essential Bra, come with a bra extender for this reason. It lets you add a little room to the band yourself without having to order a whole size up.

What if you can't test this before you order?

You can only really run these checks once the bra is actually on your body, and that's only possible after you order. That's exactly why several customers say they only realized a different model worked better once they tried it on, like when they exchanged for the Daily Essential.

At Monavida, that's what our 30-day perfect fit guarantee is for. If a model doesn't fit the way you expected, you don't have to quietly stash it in a drawer. You can read how that works in practice in this article on exchanging for free without shipping anything back. If you're wondering how fast and personal that kind of exchange really is, take a look at this experience with customer service at a bra store.

Frequently asked questions

Does a different fit mean the size chart is wrong?

No. The size chart is correct for the model it belongs to, but every model has its own chart. Always use the chart for the specific model you're ordering, not one you remember from a different brand or model.

Do I need to measure myself again for every new bra model?

Your body measurements stay the same, but it's smart to check those measurements against the new model's chart before you order. Five minutes of measuring saves you a lot of hassle with exchanges later.

What if I need a different size in two different models?

That's normal and says nothing about your body. Jot down which size works for you in each model, so you don't have to figure it out again next time.

Why does my cup spill over even though I'm wearing the size the chart says I should?

That means the cup shape of that particular model doesn't match your breast shape, even if the number on the label is correct. In that case, try the same band size with a bigger cup, or pick a model with a softer, more flexible cup.

Can I exchange a bra if the size still isn't right?

Yes. Within the 30-day perfect fit guarantee, you can exchange a model that doesn't fit for a size or model that does.

Still not sure which model fits your body? The Daily Essential Bra is made to adapt to your shape instead of the other way around, with memory foam cups and a wide band that carries the weight instead of your straps.
